Two days before Miami finally play football, game week has delivered its first unwelcome surprise.
Ja’Boree Antoine is out against Stanford.
Miami’s first ACC availability report of the season also lists tight end Luka Gilbert as unavailable for Friday night’s opener. Gilbert’s absence was already expected following his season-ending injury.
Antoine is the significant development.
And suddenly one of Miami’s most interesting defensive questions has another wrinkle.
Antoine ruled out against Stanford
Antoine appeared in 12 games as a true freshman for Miami in 2025, recording seven tackles and a pass breakup while beginning to establish himself in the Hurricanes’ secondary.
He had been pushing for a bigger role in 2026, but his first opportunity to show that progression will now have to wait.
The first ACC availability report lists Antoine as out, finally providing official confirmation after speculation that he had picked up an issue late in camp.
There is no point guessing how long he will be unavailable.
For now, we know one thing.
He will not play on Friday.
That removes one option from Corey Hetherman’s defensive backfield against a Stanford offence that has already shown it can throw the football.
Davis Warren passed for 310 yards in the Cardinal’s 37-27 Week Zero win over Hawaii.
Miami’s response becomes fairly obvious.
Do not let him get comfortable.
If Damon Wilson II, Marquise Lightfoot, Armondo Blount, Ahmad Moten and the rest of Miami’s defensive front can make Warren play under pressure, Antoine’s absence becomes considerably easier to manage.
If Warren gets the clean pockets Hawaii gave him?
That secondary will be tested.
Stanford have availability questions too
Miami are not the only team carrying uncertainty into Friday.
Stanford receiver Caden High is listed as questionable after working his way back from injury, although he reportedly participated fully in Tuesday practice.
That is one to watch.
Warren already showed against Hawaii that he can move the football when given time.
Giving him another experienced target would make Miami’s job slightly more complicated.
But whether High plays or not, Hetherman’s priority does not change.
Pressure the quarterback.
Antoine being unavailable simply makes that front-seven battle even more important.
Miami settle into California
While the availability report grabbed the headlines overnight, Miami have also begun the long journey west.
Cristobal’s decision to travel early gives his players time to acclimatise before Friday’s 9pm ET kick-off.
That is a journey of more than 3,000 miles and a three-hour time difference.
Miami have learned from previous West Coast trips, and Cristobal clearly has no interest in allowing travel to become an excuse.
The Hurricanes arrive as the No. 7 team in the country.
Stanford arrive at 1-0.
One side has already played competitive football.
The other has spent eight months preparing for this moment.
By Friday, none of that matters anymore.
Fletcher gets one final title chase
Tuesday also brought fresh attention to Mark Fletcher Jr.
Fletcher could have entered the NFL Draft after last season.
Instead, he returned.
After rushing for 1,192 yards and 12 touchdowns during Miami’s run to the National Championship Game, he gets one final opportunity to finish the job.
And his presence gives Shannon Dawson something invaluable alongside Darian Mensah.
Balance.
Miami have Malachi Toney and Cooper Barkate outside.
They have Mensah capable of pushing the ball downfield.
And they have a running back who does not need much introduction to Stanford.
Fletcher rushed for 108 yards and three touchdowns against the Cardinal last season.
Stanford will remember him.
Two days to Stanford
Miami visit Stanford on Friday 4 September at 9pm ET.
For us in the UK, that means 2am on Saturday 5 September.
Two days.
And official information is finally replacing August speculation.
Antoine is out.
Gilbert is out.
Further availability reports will follow before kick-off, meaning this picture can still change.
But Miami are in California.
Stanford are waiting.
And the season is almost here.
The Last Word from Across the Pond
Miami’s first availability report has given game week its first real setback.
Antoine was supposed to be part of the new-look secondary we have spent August trying to understand. On Friday, Hetherman will have to build his opening-night rotation without him.
Stanford have questions of their own.
And around all of that, Miami are settling into California, Fletcher is preparing for one final championship chase and a rebuilt team is almost out of time for preparation.
Two days remain.
The injury reports are real.
The travel is real.
And very soon, the football will be too.
