Malachi Toney has added another preseason honour to an already impressive collection, while Miami’s second day of camp brought a few more names into focus.
The Hurricanes confirmed that Toney has been named to The Sporting News 2026 Preseason All-America First Team after a remarkable freshman season that saw him set Miami records with 109 receptions and 1,211 receiving yards.
The expectations are obviously much higher heading into year two. Toney is no longer the breakout name nobody quite knows how to handle. Opposing defences will be building game plans around stopping him, while Miami will be hoping his partnership with new quarterback Darian Mensah develops quickly.
Away from the headline name, there were some encouraging updates from Greentree.
Offensive lineman Matthew McCoy praised freshman Jackson Cantwell, highlighting his size, athleticism and how quickly he is picking things up. Cantwell’s progress could quickly become one of the more interesting battles to follow throughout camp.
On defence, Ahmad Moten Sr. is another player worth watching after being limited during the spring. Moten used that time to study the defence and is now back competing, including plenty of work against Mark Fletcher Jr.
The secondary is also beginning to attract attention, with sophomore Ja’Boree Antoine pushing for a bigger role after appearing in 12 games during his freshman season.
There were no major new injury announcements or recruiting developments to report, which means the focus remains firmly on camp and the competition for places.
For UK Canes fans, all of this is building towards the season opener at Stanford on Friday 4 September, which means another delightful 2am Saturday morning kick-off on this side of the Atlantic.
The Last Word from Across the Pond
Toney will understandably take most of the headlines, but camp is often about the names underneath them. Cantwell, Moten and Antoine are three worth keeping an eye on as Miami starts putting together the depth chart that will eventually take the field against Stanford.
