Miami’s secondary has taken another hit.

Safety Dylan Day is out against Stanford.

Day was added to Miami’s unavailable list on Wednesday night, joining Ja’Boree Antoine and tight end Luka Gilbert ahead of Friday’s season opener.

Gilbert’s absence was already known.

Antoine was the first game-week setback.

Now Miami have lost another option from Corey Hetherman’s defensive backfield less than two days before kick-off.

Day’s absence opens the door for Dunnigan

Day was not expected to be one of Miami’s headline defenders, but he had worked his way into the safety rotation.

He played 120 defensive snaps in 2025, recording 11 tackles, one sack and two pass break-ups.

That experience now disappears from Friday’s rotation.

Which brings us back to JJ Dunnigan.

We have talked about the freshman throughout camp because the praise around him has been difficult to ignore.

Hetherman has already said Dunnigan is ready to contribute, and Day being ruled out gives him an even clearer route onto the field.

Miami are not suddenly facing a secondary crisis.

But losing Antoine and Day before facing a quarterback who threw for 310 yards last weekend is hardly ideal.

Friday might give us our first proper look at whether all that Dunnigan camp buzz was justified.

Make Stanford one-dimensional

The easiest way to protect a secondary missing bodies is fairly simple.

Make life miserable for the quarterback.

Stanford showed against Hawaii that its offence can hurt teams in two different ways.

Davis Warren threw for 310 yards.

Micah Ford ran for 99 yards and three touchdowns.

Miami cannot allow both of those things to work at the same time.

The priority should be taking away Ford on early downs and forcing Warren into obvious passing situations.

That is when Miami’s defensive front can take over.

Damon Wilson II.

Marquise Lightfoot.

Armondo Blount.

Ahmad Moten.

Justin Scott.

And newcomer Keona Davis, who arrives at Miami after starting 12 games for Nebraska last season.

If that group controls the line of scrimmage, losing Day and Antoine becomes far easier to absorb.

If Warren gets time?

Dunnigan and the rest of Miami’s secondary are going to find out very quickly what Friday night college football feels like.

Day is the latest change.

Further availability updates are still expected before kick-off, so there is little value in guessing beyond what has been officially reported.

Miami face Stanford on Friday 4 September at 9pm ET, live on ESPN in the United States.

For UK Canes, that means 2am on Saturday 5 September.

Miami spent the summer building depth precisely because weeks like this happen.

Losing Antoine was disappointing.

Adding Day to the unavailable list puts more pressure on a secondary preparing to face a quarterback who has already thrown for 310 yards this season.

It is not a crisis.

But it makes Miami’s defensive front even more important and could bring Dunnigan into the picture earlier than expected.

The preparation is nearly finished.
