Miami @ SMU – Match Preview

Date: Saturday 1 November 2025
Kick-off: 12:00 pm ET / 4:00 pm UK
Location: Gerald J. Ford Stadium, University Park, Texas
TV: DAZN (UK)

The Match Up

The No. 10 Miami Hurricanes (6-1, 2-1 ACC) travel to Dallas to face the SMU Mustangs (5-3, 3-1 ACC) in what could be one of the more entertaining games of the week.

The Canes head in on a high after dismantling Stanford 42-7, while SMU continue to show they belong in the ACC after making the jump from the AAC. Both teams have explosive offences and a point to prove with Miami chasing playoff positioning, SMU looking to earn their first signature win of the season.

Storylines to Watch

Miami: Maintain the Momentum

Carson Beck has bounced back strongly from his Louisville turnover troubles, completing around 73% of his passes for 1,673 yards, 12 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

Mark Fletcher Jr. continues to drive the ground game with 552 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns, providing the physical edge Miami thrive on.

The key for the Canes will be avoiding the slow starts that have crept into a few games. Playing on the road, especially against a team that thrives on tempo, demands sharp execution early.

SMU: Fast Offence, Familiar Faces

The Mustangs bring speed, creativity, and a fearless offensive style. Quarterback Kevin Jennings leads the way, combining efficiency and mobility. He’s thrown for just over 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns, and adds an extra dimension with his legs although he has been carrying an injury this season.

Running back Chris Johnson Jr. has been averaging 7.5 yards per carry and finding the end zone 3 times this season.
At receiver, former Cane Romello Brinson is a legitimate deep threat with 15.5 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Halen Cooper and Jordan Hudson round out a dangerous trio that can challenge Miami’s secondary.

Key Players to Watch

Miami Hurricanes

Carson Beck (QB) – Leads a balanced, efficient attack; must avoid turnovers.

Mark Fletcher Jr. (RB) – The tone setter on the ground; look for him to get plenty of touches early.

Malachi Toney (WR) – The standout freshman continues to rise, already over 560 receiving yards and three scores.

Rueben Bain Jr. (DE) – The defensive heartbeat, if he wins at the line, Miami will control the game.

SMU Mustangs

Kevin Jennings (QB) – The dual threat leader of SMU’s offence; can keep plays alive under pressure.

Chris Johnson Jr. (RB) – The workhorse back who can wear down defences.

Romello Brinson (WR) – The former Hurricane could be a key factor in stretching the field.

Terry Webb (DT) – The Mustangs’ sack leader; vital to containing Beck and our running game.

Keys to Victory

For Miami:

Start fast and avoid first half sloppiness and take control early.

Keep the balance between run and pass to control the tempo.

Limit explosive plays from SMU’s wideouts.

For SMU:

Sustain drives and keep Miami’s defence on the field.

Protect Jennings from Miami’s pass rush which is relentless.

Capitalise on turnovers and short fields.

Prediction

SMU are capable of keeping this one close early, but Miami’s depth and defensive strength should take over after half time. Expect Beck to stay composed, Fletcher to grind down the clock, and the Canes’ front seven to make the difference.

Predicted Score: Miami 30 – SMU 17

Game Prediction: Canes Win 30-17

The Last Word from Across the Pond

For once, it’s an afternoon kick off for UK Canes fans so no midnight brews or yawns required. I might just miss the kick off due to the other type of football this weekend. This will be a real test of Miami’s discipline against a tricky, fast paced SMU team.

Win here, and the path to the CFP stays firmly open.
