Week 9 – Stanford 7 Miami 42

Final Score: Miami 42, Stanford 7
Date: Saturday 25 October 2025
Venue: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida
Kick-off: 7:00 pm ET / 12:00 am UK

The Recap: Two Halves, One Statement

Miami entered the contest needing a response following the previous week’s loss. After a shaky start trailing 7-0 after the opening quarter and level 7-7 at half-time, the Hurricanes flipped the switch. They outscored Stanford 35-0 in the final 30 minutes, turning what looked like a battle into a rout.

The final yardage told the story: Miami out gained Stanford roughly 404 to 144 yards and refused to let the Cardinal build any momentum.

Key Performers and Turning Points

Mark Fletcher Jr. delivered a breakout game with 23 carries for 106 yards and three rushing touchdowns. It was his best career outing and provided the run game spark Miami had been missing.

Carson Beck rebounded strongly after his four interception nightmare the week before. He completed 21 of 28 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown with no turnovers which was exactly the steady reset Miami needed.

Malachi Toney continued his stellar form with several key catches and two long punt returns that completely flipped field position and fuelled momentum changing drives.

Miami’s defence suffocated Stanford in the second half, allowing only 25 yards over their final eight possessions and forcing two turnovers.

Malachi Toney: The Freshman Phenomenon

Few freshmen in college football have made an impact as quickly as Malachi Toney. The true freshman receiver continues to look like a veteran presence in this Hurricanes offence.

Through seven games, Toney has 43 receptions for 562 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 13.1 yards per catch. He’s also added 27 rushing yards on a handful of carries, showing his versatility as an offensive weapon.

His maturity and consistency have turned heads nationally. Coaches and analysts alike describe him as one of the most polished first year players in the country, someone who runs crisp routes, rarely drops a pass and consistently finds space against experienced defensive backs.

Toney’s impact extends to special teams, where his punt returns have regularly given Miami a field-position advantage. His all round contribution makes him a genuine contender for ACC Freshman of the Year and potentially wider recognition if his production continues.

Simply put, Malachi Toney isn’t just part of Miami’s future he’s already shaping their present.

What Went Right and What Needs Work

Positives

The ground game finally clicked. Fletcher’s three touchdowns provided balance and control. (Although all Fletcher’s TD’s came through the middle)

Beck’s clean performance restored confidence after the previous week’s turnovers.

The defensive unit’s second half dominance underlined Miami’s top tier defensive reputation.

Special teams created momentum thanks to Toney’s explosive returns.

Areas to Improve

Another slow start saw the Canes level at half time when they should have been clear.

Pre-snap penalties and lapses in concentration remain an issue.

Upcoming opponents will punish sloppy openings, so maintaining consistency is vital.

New AP Poll Ranking

Following the emphatic win over Stanford, the Hurricanes sit No. 10 in the latest AP Top 25. The strong second half showing restored confidence in their playoff hopes and reaffirmed their place among the top teams in college football.

For fans watching from across the pond, it’s another proud moment as The U continues to climb the national conversation.
