It was another quieter day around The U, but Wednesday gave us an interesting look beyond the Stanford opener as some of Miami’s younger players continue preparing for their opportunity.

Coleman developing behind Mensah

Most of the quarterback conversation this summer has understandably centred on Darian Mensah.

But Miami are also quietly working on what comes next.

Freshman Dereon Coleman arrived in Coral Gables at around 150 pounds and has already added 26 pounds, taking him to 176 as he works towards eventually reaching around 200.

The physical progress is impressive.

The development happening alongside Mensah might matter even more.

Coleman told CaneSport that Mensah regularly pulls him aside during practice to discuss plays before the pair study film together afterwards. Meanwhile, Luke Nickel is currently expected to serve as Miami’s QB2, leaving Coleman and Judd Anderson with time to continue developing behind him.

Miami have solved quarterback through the transfer market with Cam Ward, Carson Beck and now Mensah.

Eventually, Cristobal would love the next answer to already be on campus.

Coleman is one of the players trying to become it.

Who becomes Miami’s next pass-rush problem?

There is a similar succession story developing on defence.

Miami cannot simply replace Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor player-for-player.

Both are gone after becoming first-round NFL Draft picks, and the challenge now falls to the collection of talent Cristobal has assembled behind them. CaneSport highlighted that same idea this week: Miami’s best eras were built by having the next group ready when stars departed.

Marquise Lightfoot, Damon Wilson II, Armondo Blount, Justin Scott and Ahmad Moten all have opportunities to become significant pieces.

Wilson already brings proven production. Lightfoot has generated plenty of camp attention. Blount and Scott give Miami different options across the front.

Nobody needs to become Bain overnight.

Miami need the group to replace his impact collectively.

Recruiting keeps moving

The future theme extended to recruiting, where tight end commit Demarcus Deroche is fully healthy again after completing his rehabilitation from a spring leg injury.

Deroche has been committed to Miami for more than a year and recently shut down his recruitment after his official visit.

Another future Hurricane getting back on the field is welcome news as the 2027 class continues taking shape.

The Last Word from Across the Pond

Wednesday provided a useful reminder of what sustainable programmes are supposed to look like.

Mensah is preparing to lead Miami now while Coleman develops behind him.

Bain and Mesidor have moved on, but another collection of talented defensive linemen are waiting for their chance.

The focus is rightly on 2026 and a Stanford opener that is getting very close. Miami officially kick off in California at 9pm ET on Friday 4 September.

But Cristobal is already trying to make sure there is another wave ready when the current one moves on.
