Across the Pond Daily: Miami Hold Steady as North Carolina Injury Picture Shifts

No. 1 Miami head to Chapel Hill with their injury list unchanged, but North Carolina’s latest availability report contains one improvement and several unresolved questions ahead of Saturday’s Halloween clash.

By

With Halloween almost upon us, Miami’s preparations for North Carolina are nearly complete, and the latest ACC availability report has brought a little more clarity ahead of Saturday night.

For the Hurricanes, there’s nothing new to worry about. The same six players remain ruled out, with no additional Miami names appearing on Thursday’s updated report.

That’s welcome news for Mario Cristobal, particularly after a physically demanding few weeks.

One change for North Carolina, but questions remain

The main development comes from the North Carolina side.

Defensive lineman Zavion Griffin-Haynes has been upgraded from questionable to probable, improving his chances of featuring against Miami.

However, the Tar Heels still have five players ruled out and four listed as questionable, including offensive linemen Jordan Hall and Andrew Threatt.

That’s where things get interesting.

Miami enter Saturday leading the entire FBS in rushing defence, allowing just 60 yards per game.

Corey Hetherman’s defensive front has been one of the most reliable parts of this Hurricanes team, and any uncertainty along North Carolina’s offensive line could make life particularly difficult for quarterback Billy Edwards Jr.

Of course, questionable doesn’t mean unavailable, and Bill Belichick still has time to prepare his options.

But if Miami can control the line of scrimmage early, they’ll give themselves an excellent platform to build another road victory.

Miami have some unfinished business

Max Buchanan remains Miami’s most significant absence, with the Hurricanes continuing to manage without their starting right guard.

Otherwise, the injury picture is encouraging heading into another important ACC fixture.

The bigger challenge might be putting recent history behind them.

North Carolina have won the last five meetings between these programmes, and Miami haven’t won in Chapel Hill since 2017.

That’s a record I’d very much like to see change tomorrow.

For those of us watching from the UK, it’s an 11:30pm kick off on Saturday 31 October, with ABC showing the game in America and DAZN in the UK.

Not quite the luxury of last weekend’s 5pm start, but at least we’re kicking off before midnight.

I’ll have my full Miami vs North Carolina match preview up on Canes Across The Pond today at 2pm UK time, taking a closer look at the key matchups, the dangers UNC present and what Miami need to do to finally end that losing streak.

The Last Word from Across the Pond

The injury update itself isn’t particularly dramatic, but that’s probably exactly what Cristobal wants at this stage.

Miami are 7-0, ranked No. 1 and heading into a difficult stretch of the schedule. Having a stable squad is important, particularly with Notre Dame waiting next weekend.

The uncertainty surrounding North Carolina’s offensive line could favour Miami, but the Hurricanes still need to take advantage on the field.

Five consecutive defeats against the Tar Heels is enough.

Let’s end that run, move to 8-0 and make Halloween a good one for Canes fans everywhere.
