Miami’s first ACC availability report ahead of Florida State has brought some welcome encouragement. No Hurricanes are listed as questionable, probable or doubtful, while several defensive names we have been tracking are now off the injury report entirely.
Miami’s defence gets its options back
The biggest takeaway from Wednesday night’s report is that Miami’s defence looks healthier at the right time.
Xavier Lucas, Marquise Lightfoot, Ezekiel Marcelin Jr. and Damari Brown are all absent from the report, which is an encouraging indication of their availability for Saturday. Mario Cristobal had already said earlier in the week that they were healthy following the bye.
Miami have spent much of the past few weeks managing injuries, moving players into different roles and relying on younger contributors. They have handled that well, but getting more established players back before Florida State is a boost for defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman.
The interesting part is not simply who can play, but how Hetherman uses them. Miami have developed useful depth during the injury spell. If the returning players can slot back in without losing that flexibility, the defence could have more ways to respond when Saturday’s game becomes unpredictable.
Buchanan remains the biggest concern
There is still one obvious problem on the other side of the ball. Starting right guard Max Buchanan is among six Hurricanes listed as out, along with Joshua Moore, CharMar Brown, Ja’Boree Antoine, OJ Frederique Jr. and Luka Gilbert.
Buchanan’s absence is not a surprise, but it matters. Miami will again have to lean on the offensive-line depth that has been tested through the opening five games, including Ben Congdon and SJ Alofaituli.
This is where I feel more cautious than excited about the injury picture. Miami have enough attacking quality to trouble Florida State, but losing continuity up front is one way to make the game harder than it needs to be. Giving Darian Mensah time to operate and opening lanes for the running backs should matter more than chasing another spectacular scoreline.
The report confirms Buchanan is unavailable for Saturday. It does not establish when he might return.
Florida State have problems of their own
Florida State’s initial report lists eight players as out and another as questionable. The absences include players at running back, wide receiver and in the secondary, while several others are designated probable.
That looks like a potential opportunity for Miami’s offence, particularly after Louisville rushed for 397 yards against the Seminoles last weekend. But it is analysis rather than a guarantee: Florida State have had a week to review that performance, and rivalry games have a habit of testing even the strongest favourites.
The recruiting backdrop should also be lively, with a sizeable group of prospects reportedly expected to attend. Those are anticipated visits rather than confirmed commitments, so the real news today remains the availability picture.

Hard Rock Stadium is hosting an Orange Out. For those of us watching from Yorkshire, it is another Saturday night running into Sunday morning, but at least the return of a few key defenders gives us one less thing to worry about before kick off.
The Last Word from Across the Pond
The best part of this update is not that Miami are suddenly injury free. They are not. It is that several weeks of forced changes may have left Hetherman with a deeper, more adaptable defence than he would otherwise have had.
The real test will be whether those extra options make a difference when Florida State adjusts during the game. If Miami can combine returning starters with the experience their replacements have gained, the injury spell might yet have an unexpected upside.
