If you’ve spent any time watching college football, you’ve almost certainly heard someone say:
“He’s in the Heisman conversation.” Or maybe… “That’s a Heisman moment.”
But what exactly is the Heisman Trophy?
Is it like the Ballon d’Or? The NFL MVP? Or something completely different?
The answer is… a little bit of all three.
The Heisman Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college football, recognising the most outstanding player in the country each season. It’s the award every college football player dreams of winning and one of the sport’s highest honours. (Heisman)
Let’s take a closer look.
What Is the Heisman Trophy?
Awarded every year since 1935, the Heisman Trophy recognises the most outstanding player in college football.
It isn’t awarded to the best team.
It isn’t awarded to the National Champion.
It’s awarded to the player who has produced the most outstanding season.
Winning a Heisman instantly places a player among some of the biggest names in the history of the sport.
Why Is It Called the Heisman Trophy?
The award is named after John Heisman, one of the most influential coaches in the history of American football.
If the name sounds familiar, that’s because you’ve probably already heard it every Saturday during the season.
Although few modern fans know much about John Heisman himself, his name has become synonymous with greatness.
Who Votes for the Heisman?
Unlike many awards, the winner isn’t decided by one person.
More than 900 voters cast ballots each year.
These include:
- Sports journalists from across the United States.
- Every living Heisman Trophy winner.
- One combined fan vote, earned through public voting. (Heisman)
Each voter ranks their top three players.
- First place = 3 points
- Second place = 2 points
- Third place = 1 point
The player with the most points wins the trophy. (Heisman)
When Is the Winner Announced?
The Heisman Trophy is awarded every December, after the regular season and conference championship games but before the College Football Playoff reaches its conclusion.
Four finalists are invited to New York for the Heisman Trophy Ceremony, where the winner is announced live on television. Since 2021, the top four vote-getters have automatically become finalists. (Heisman)
For many players, simply receiving that invitation is a career highlight.
Does the Best Player Always Win?
Not necessarily.
The Heisman is awarded to the most outstanding player, not simply the player with the best statistics.
Voters often consider:
- Individual performances.
- Strength of opposition.
- Big-game moments.
- Team success.
- Leadership.
- Consistency throughout the season.
That’s why the award often creates plenty of debate.
Every fan has their own opinion.
Which Positions Usually Win?
Quarterbacks dominate.
Their influence on games means they often receive the most attention.
Running backs have also enjoyed plenty of success over the years.
More recently, we’ve seen players at other positions break through.
In 2024, Colorado’s Travis Hunter became the first primarily two-way player in decades to win the award, thanks to his remarkable performances at both cornerback and wide receiver. (Heisman)
While it’s possible for defensive players, wide receivers or even special teams stars to win, they usually need to produce truly extraordinary seasons.
Miami and the Heisman Trophy
The Hurricanes have a proud history when it comes to the Heisman Trophy.
Miami has produced two winners:
- Vinny Testaverde (1986)
- Gino Torretta (1992) (Heisman)
Many other Hurricanes have finished as finalists over the years, helping cement Miami’s reputation as one of college football’s biggest programmes.
Most recently, Cam Ward became a Heisman finalist after a sensational season that saw him lead one of the nation’s most explosive offences and finish fourth in the voting. (AP News)
For Miami fans, having a player in New York is another reminder that The U is producing elite talent once again.
Does Winning the Heisman Guarantee NFL Success?
No.
Many Heisman winners have gone on to become NFL stars.
Others haven’t.
Likewise, plenty of NFL legends never won the Heisman.
The award recognises the best college football season, not who will necessarily have the best professional career.
That’s one of the things that makes it so fascinating.
Why Should New Fans Care?
The Heisman Trophy gives fans another storyline to follow throughout the season.
Every spectacular touchdown.
Every game-winning drive.
Every unforgettable performance.
They all become part of the conversation.
By November, you’ll hear commentators talking about the “Heisman race” almost every weekend.
And once you’ve followed it for a season, you’ll find yourself joining the debate too.
