Trying to predict the ACC is rarely a sensible use of anyone’s time.
The conference spent much of the 2025 season tying itself into increasingly complicated knots. Virginia finished top of the regular-season standings at 7-1, Duke won the ACC Championship, and Miami reached the College Football Playoff National Championship despite missing the trip to Charlotte.
It was the perfect summary of ACC football.
Miami came closer to winning a national championship than they did to winning the conference championship. Duke lifted the ACC trophy after entering the title game through a multi-team tiebreaker. Virginia went from being an afterthought to finishing with 11 victories.
The conference has responded by changing both its scheduling model and its tiebreaker policy.
That should simplify everything.
Probably.
Miami Are the Official ACC Favourites
For once, Canes fans are not the only people expecting Miami to win the conference.
More than 185 credentialed media members voted Miami as the preseason favourite following the ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte. The Hurricanes received 165 first-place votes and finished comfortably ahead of SMU, Louisville and Clemson.
Georgia Tech completed the top five, followed by Virginia, NC State, Virginia Tech, Pitt and defending champion Duke. Florida State were picked 11th, while California, Wake Forest, Syracuse, North Carolina, Boston College and Stanford completed the predicted order.
In one of the more entertaining details from the poll, Stanford received a first-place vote despite being predicted to finish 17th overall. Someone in Charlotte was either extremely confident or had one too many pints the night before voting.
Miami’s position is understandable.
Mario Cristobal has assembled the most complete roster in the ACC. Darian Mensah arrives after leading Duke to the conference championship, Malachi Toney is one of the most exciting players in the country and Mark Fletcher Jr. leads another deep running-back room.
The Hurricanes also place several players on major preseason All-America teams. Toney, Fletcher, Cooper Barkate, Bryce Fitzgerald, Ahmad Moten and Damon Wilson II have all received national recognition entering the season.
The talent is ready this season and the pressure is now unavoidable.
A Different ACC Schedule in 2026
The ACC begins its transition towards a nine-game conference schedule this season.
Twelve schools will play nine ACC games and at least one Power Four non-conference opponent. Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina will play eight conference games and at least two Power Four opponents outside the league.
From 2027, 16 teams will play nine conference games each season. One team will rotate onto an eight-game schedule because the ACC has 17 football members.
Nine-game ACC teams
California, Duke, Louisville, Miami, NC State, Pitt, SMU, Stanford, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
Eight-game ACC teams
Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina.
The change gives supporters more meaningful conference games, but it also creates an obvious problem.
How do you fairly compare teams that have played different numbers of ACC games?
The answer is a new tiebreaker system that is simple enough to understand once you have stared at it for several hours.
How the New ACC Tiebreaker Works
The ACC Championship Game will continue to feature the two postseason-eligible teams with the best conference records.
However, winning percentage alone will not always determine which teams are considered tied.
A team playing a different number of conference games can be brought into the tiebreaker when it finishes with either:
- The same number of ACC wins as a team with a higher conference winning percentage
- The same number of ACC losses as a team with a higher conference winning percentage
For example, an 8-1 team could be brought into a tie with an 8-0 team because both have eight conference victories.
A 7-1 team could be brought into a tie with an 8-1 team because both have one conference defeat.
This is designed to stop a team being automatically rewarded or penalised simply because it played eight league games rather than nine.
Two-team ties
When two teams are tied, the process is:
- Head-to-head conference result
- Team Success Ranking provided by SportSource Analytics
- A draw administered by the ACC commissioner or their representative
The Team Success Ranking will therefore carry significant influence when two contenders have not played each other. It is designed to compare the teams’ wider bodies of work after every regular-season game has been completed.
Ties involving three or more teams
When every tied team has played the others, the best record in games between the tied teams is considered first.
When they have not all played one another, a team that defeated every other tied team can be placed into the championship game. A team that lost to every other tied team can be removed from consideration.
The Team Success Ranking is used when head-to-head results cannot separate the teams. A draw remains the final option if every previous step fails.
Each time a team is selected or eliminated, the process can restart with the remaining teams.
The ACC says the system was tested against more than 10,000 simulated season outcomes. Its three guiding principles are that head-to-head results should matter most, teams should not be unfairly affected by playing a different number of league games and the strongest overall body of work should be rewarded when results cannot settle the tie.
That sounds fair.
It also sounds like something that will produce several hundred increasingly angry social media posts during the final weekend of November.
Why Winning the ACC Matters
The College Football Playoff will remain a 12-team competition for the 2026 season.
The ACC champion receives an automatic place alongside the champions of the Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC. The highest-ranked champion from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12 or Sun Belt also qualifies, with the remaining seven places going to the highest-ranked available teams.
Winning the ACC does not automatically guarantee a first-round bye. The four highest-ranked teams receive the byes, regardless of whether they won a conference championship.
Teams seeded fifth through 12th play first-round games at campus sites. The quarterfinals and semifinals then move into the designated bowl games.
For Miami, the target should therefore be bigger than merely qualifying for the Playoff.
Win the ACC, finish in the top four and avoid the additional first-round game.
That is the clearest route back towards the national championship.
The 2026 ACC Team-by-Team Preview
The records listed below are from the 2025 season. The predictions are our own and are provided primarily so everyone can return in December and explain why they always knew the exact opposite would happen.
1. Miami Hurricanes
2025 record: 13-3, 6-2 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 12-0
Key players: Darian Mensah, Malachi Toney, Mark Fletcher Jr., Cooper Barkate, Damon Wilson II and Bryce Fitzgerald
Miami enter 2026 with something they have not always handled comfortably in the ACC era: expectation.
The Hurricanes are not simply being discussed as conference contenders. They are the team everyone else is trying to catch.
Mario Cristobal has assembled what looks like the deepest and most complete roster in the ACC, with enough quality across the offence and defence to make another serious College Football Playoff run.
Darian Mensah arrives from Duke after helping the Blue Devils win the ACC Championship, giving Miami an experienced quarterback who already knows what it takes to win this conference. He is reunited with Cooper Barkate, while Malachi Toney returns as one of the most dangerous offensive players in the country.
Toney has already become the headline name, but this offence should not need to rely on one player.
Mark Fletcher Jr. leads another loaded Miami backfield, Mensah gives the Hurricanes a proven passing threat and the receiving room has enough depth to create problems all over the field.
The biggest question is the offensive line.
Four new starters must settle quickly, particularly with road trips to Clemson and Notre Dame waiting on the schedule. Cristobal has built his programme around controlling the line of scrimmage, so that unit will determine whether Miami are simply very good or genuinely capable of going unbeaten.
Defensively, replacing Rueben Bain Jr. and other NFL-calibre talent would be a serious problem for most programmes.
Miami have responded by adding more talent.
Missouri transfer Damon Wilson II arrives after recording nine sacks in 2025, while Ahmad Moten, Justin Scott, Mohamed Toure and Bryce Fitzgerald give the Hurricanes proven quality throughout the defence.
There will be difficult games.
Clemson away is never comfortable. Florida State will arrive at Hard Rock Stadium desperate to damage Miami’s season. Virginia Tech should be significantly improved under James Franklin.
Then there is Notre Dame.
The trip to South Bend is the game that stands out immediately when looking for the most likely defeat on Miami’s schedule. Notre Dame will be physical, talented and playing at home in one of the biggest games of the season.
I am still picking Miami.
If we believe this team are capable of returning to the national championship game, there comes a point where you have to stop finding reasons they might lose and start asking whether the opponent can actually beat them.
Miami have the quarterback, the running game, explosive receivers and defensive talent.
And after last season’s run to the national championship game, they should have the belief that they belong among college football’s elite.
South Bend will be the toughest test but Miami pass it.
The bigger danger might actually come from the ACC itself. The Hurricanes have spent years finding one conference defeat nobody expected, and the new scheduling and tiebreaker system makes dropping a league game even more dangerous.
The best way to avoid having SportSource Analytics or an ACC tiebreaker determine whether Miami reaches Charlotte is pretty simple.
Win them all.
Biggest question: Can Miami finally turn the most talented roster in the ACC into an unbeaten regular season and the programme’s first ACC Championship?
Prediction: 12-0. Miami beat Notre Dame in South Bend, win the ACC and enter the College Football Playoff as one of the best teams in the country.
2. SMU Mustangs
2025 record: 9-4, 6-2 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 10-2
Key players: Kevin Jennings, PJ Williams, Yannick Smith, Kendrick Raphael and Brandon Booker
It is time to stop describing SMU as the new team in the ACC.
The Mustangs have established themselves as one of the conference’s most consistent programmes. Kevin Jennings gives them an experienced quarterback, while PJ Williams anchors what should be one of the better offensive lines in the league.
The concern is the amount of production being replaced at receiver and on defence.
The schedule is favourable. SMU avoid Miami and host California, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. Early trips to Florida State and Louisville will tell us whether the Mustangs are genuine championship contenders.
Biggest question: Can the rebuilt defence develop quickly enough to support Jennings?
Prediction: 10-2 and a place in the ACC Championship Game.
3. Louisville Cardinals
2025 record: 9-4, 4-4 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 10-2
Key players: Lincoln Kienholz, Isaac Brown, Keyjuan Brown, Tre Richardson and Clev Lubin
Louisville might possess the best combination of coaching, running-back talent and schedule outside Miami.
Jeff Brohm has won at least nine games in each of his first three seasons with the Cardinals. Ohio State transfer Lincoln Kienholz is his latest quarterback project.
Kienholz does not need to carry the offence. He needs to complement one of the best backfields in the country.
Isaac Brown has earned preseason All-America recognition, while Keyjuan Brown gives Louisville another explosive option. Richardson adds speed as a receiver and returner, and Lubin leads an experienced defensive front.
Louisville lost three ACC games by a combined seven points last season. Turning those narrow defeats into victories could be the difference between another good season and a trip to Charlotte.
Biggest question: Can Kienholz provide consistent quarterback play?
Prediction: 10-2, narrowly missing the championship game through the new tiebreaker.
4. Clemson Tigers
2025 record: 7-6, 4-4 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 9-3
Key players: Christopher Vizzina, Tait Reynolds, Bryant Wesco Jr., Gideon Davidson and Sammy Brown
Clemson are trying to prove that 2025 was a bad season rather than the beginning of a long-term decline.
Seven wins represented the programme’s worst campaign in 15 years. Dabo Swinney has responded by bringing former offensive coordinator Chad Morris back to help revive the attack.
Vizzina and Reynolds will compete at quarterback. Whoever wins the job will inherit talented receivers, but must operate behind an offensive line replacing several starters.
The defence should keep Clemson competitive. Sammy Brown enters the year as one of the best linebackers in the country and has been named a Walter Camp preseason first-team All-American.
Clemson host Miami, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Virginia Tech, but travel to LSU, California and Florida State.
Biggest question: Can Clemson rediscover an explosive offence without an established quarterback?
Prediction: 9-3 and an improvement, but no return to Charlotte.
5. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
2025 record: 9-4, 6-2 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 8-4
Key players: Alberto Mendoza, Justice Haynes, Malachi Hosley, Kyle Efford and EJ Lightsey
Replacing Haynes King is going to be difficult.
King was the personality of Georgia Tech’s rise under Brent Key. Indiana transfer Alberto Mendoza will be asked to take over an offence that also has new coordinators and several changes along the line.
The good news is that Georgia Tech may have the best running-back pairing outside Miami.
Justice Haynes rushed for 857 yards and 10 touchdowns in seven games at Michigan before transferring. Malachi Hosley gives the Yellow Jackets another proven option, while Efford and Lightsey provide leadership on defence.
The schedule contains Tennessee, Clemson, Louisville, Virginia Tech and Georgia. Eight wins would represent another successful season.
Biggest question: Can Mendoza provide enough passing threat to stop teams focusing entirely on the running game?
Prediction: 8-4 and at least one victory that damages someone else’s season.
6. NC State Wolfpack
2025 record: 8-5, 4-4 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 8-4
Key players: CJ Bailey, Jayden “Duke” Scott, Jimarion McCrimon and Isaiah Shirley
NC State are my ACC sleeper.
CJ Bailey threw for more than 3,000 yards last season and has the ability to become one of the league’s best quarterbacks.
The concern is everything being rebuilt around him. NC State have lost their top statistical receivers and return only two offensive-line starters. The defence is also replacing substantial production.
Dave Doeren has repeatedly demonstrated that NC State can win eight or nine games when the quarterback position is settled. Bailey gives the Wolfpack that foundation.
The schedule is also manageable enough for NC State to remain involved in the title conversation into November.
Biggest question: Who becomes Bailey’s reliable first option in the passing game?
Prediction: 8-4.
7. Virginia Tech Hokies
2025 record: 3-9, 2-6 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 8-4
Key players: Ethan Grunkemeyer, Luke Reynolds, Que’Sean Brown, Jaquez White and Kemari Copeland
Virginia Tech might have won the offseason.
The Hokies replaced Brent Pry with James Franklin, who brings more than 100 career victories and extensive experience rebuilding programmes.
Franklin also brought several players with him from Penn State and used the portal aggressively. Grunkemeyer is expected to take over at quarterback, while Reynolds and Brown provide new receiving options.
Former Troy cornerback Jaquez White is another important addition to a defence that needs immediate improvement.
The skill-position talent is encouraging. The question is whether the offensive and defensive lines can improve quickly enough.
Biggest question: How quickly can Franklin restore Virginia Tech’s physical identity?
Prediction: 8-4 and one of the most improved teams in the country.
8. Virginia Cavaliers
2025 record: 11-3, 7-1 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 7-5
Key players: Beau Pribula, McKale Boley, Kam Robinson and Zion Wilson
Virginia were one of the best stories in college football last season.
The Cavaliers finished top of the ACC standings and reached Charlotte after entering the year with modest expectations.
Repeating that achievement will be difficult.
Tony Elliott returns only eight starters and must replace major contributors at quarterback, running back, receiver and safety. Missouri transfer Beau Pribula takes over the offence, while Boley and Robinson give Virginia important continuity.
Regression feels likely, but last season should have changed how people view Elliott and his staff. Virginia now expect to win close games rather than merely hoping to remain competitive.
Biggest question: Was 2025 the start of something sustainable or the peak of one experienced roster?
Prediction: 7-5.
9. Pitt Panthers
2025 record: 8-5, 6-2 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 7-5
Key players: Mason Heintschel, Ja’Kyrian Turner, Ryan Baer and Braylan Lovelace
Pitt could be one of the most entertaining teams in the conference.
Heintschel transformed the offence after taking over during the 2025 season. He has the arm talent and mobility to become one of the ACC’s breakout players.
The Panthers must rebuild their receiving production and replace several important defenders.
Pat Narduzzi will probably create another competitive defence. That is simply what Narduzzi does.
The schedule is awkward, with road games against Virginia Tech, Miami, Louisville and California.
Biggest question: Can Heintschel develop from an exciting young quarterback into a consistent winner?
Prediction: 7-5, including one major upset and one completely confusing defeat.
10. California Golden Bears
2025 record: 7-6, 4-4 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 7-5
Key players: Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, Adam Mohammed, Dorian Thomas and Ricky Fletcher
California have the most valuable asset for any rebuilding programme: a potentially special quarterback.
Sagapolutele threw for more than 3,400 yards as a true freshman. His decision to remain in Berkeley gave new head coach Tosh Lupoi something meaningful to build around.
The Golden Bears have added Washington running back Adam Mohammed and several receiving options through the portal.
The offensive line remains a concern, while the defence conceded more than 30 points per ACC game last season.
That combination makes Cal difficult to predict. Sagapolutele is good enough to elevate the entire team, but the weaknesses around him could leave the Bears fighting for bowl eligibility.
Biggest question: Can the offensive line protect one of the ACC’s best young quarterbacks?
Prediction: 7-5, with a higher ceiling than that record suggests.
11. Duke Blue Devils
2025 record: 9-5, 6-2 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 6-6
Key players: Walker Eget, Nate Sheppard, Jeremiah Hasley and Luke Mergott
Duke enter the season as defending ACC champions, but their championship quarterback and leading receiver now play for Miami.
That sentence sums up modern college football rather neatly.
Mensah and Barkate both moved to Coral Gables, forcing Manny Diaz to rebuild the offence.
Former San Jose State quarterback Walker Eget is expected to compete for the starting role. Nate Sheppard becomes the focal point after rushing for more than 1,100 yards last season.
The defence also returns only three starters.
Diaz has established a strong culture at Duke, but this is a huge amount of production to replace.
Biggest question: Can Duke create a new identity without Mensah and Barkate?
Prediction: 6-6.
12. North Carolina Tar Heels
2025 record: 4-8, 2-6 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 6-6
Key players: Billy Edwards Jr., Demon June, Jordan Shipp, Christo Kelly and Melkart Abou Jaoude
The first season of the Bill Belichick experiment was a failure.
North Carolina won four games and never established a convincing offensive identity. Belichick has responded by bringing Bobby Petrino in to rebuild the attack.
Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards Jr. is expected to compete at quarterback. Demon June and Benjamin Hall provide options in the backfield, while Jordan Shipp is the main returning receiving threat.
The defence performed better than the overall record suggested, but only three starters return.
North Carolina open against TCU in Dublin before facing a schedule that includes Clemson, Notre Dame, Miami and Louisville.
Biggest question: What exactly does a Bill Belichick team with a Bobby Petrino offence look like?
Prediction: 6-6.
13. Florida State Seminoles
2025 record: 5-7, 2-6 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 5-7
Key players: Ashton Daniels, Duce Robinson, Micahi Danzy, Ousmane Kromah and Chris Jones
No ACC coach enters the season under more pressure than Mike Norvell.
Florida State have won only seven games across the last two seasons and have not won away from home since 2023.
Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels takes over at quarterback and will have plenty of skill-position talent around him.
Duce Robinson recorded more than 1,000 receiving yards in 2025 and has received first-team preseason All-America recognition. Danzy provides additional explosiveness, while Kromah and Quintrevion Wisner form a promising backfield.
The problem is the offensive line. Florida State lost its leading linemen from last season and will rely heavily on transfers.
The Seminoles face SMU, Alabama, Louisville, Miami, Clemson and Florida.
Biggest question: Can the reconstructed offensive line keep Daniels upright?
Prediction: 5-7, which may not be enough to remove the pressure on Norvell.
14. Wake Forest Demon Deacons
2025 record: 9-4, 4-4 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 5-7
Key players: Gio Lopez, Langston Hardy, Davaughn Patterson and Carlos Hernandez
Wake Forest could be much better than their final record.
The Demon Deacons return eight defensive starters from a unit that conceded just over 22 points per game.
Gio Lopez will reunite with former South Alabama offensive coordinator Rob Ezell, which should make his transition more comfortable.
Unfortunately, the schedule is brutal.
Wake host Miami and Duke while travelling to Louisville, NC State, California, SMU and Georgia Tech. The offence must also replace leading running back Demond Claiborne, several linemen and most of its established receiving production.
Biggest question: Can the rebuilt offence score enough points to reward a good defence?
Prediction: 5-7, with performances that look better than the record.
15. Syracuse Orange
2025 record: 3-9, 1-7 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 4-8
Key players: Steve Angeli, Malachi Nelson, Demetres Samuel Jr. and Chris Peal
Syracuse’s 2025 season changed when Steve Angeli suffered a season-ending injury.
The Orange began 3-1 before losing their quarterback and finishing the campaign with eight consecutive defeats.
Angeli is expected to return, while Malachi Nelson and Amari Odom provide additional depth.
The problems elsewhere are significant. Syracuse allowed 38 sacks, must rebuild much of the offensive line and conceded 6.5 yards per play defensively.
A healthy Angeli makes the Orange better than their final 2025 record, but the conference schedule offers very few easy afternoons.
Biggest question: Can the offensive line prevent another season being destroyed by pressure on the quarterback?
Prediction: 4-8.
16. Boston College Eagles
2025 record: 2-10, 1-7 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 3-9
Key players: Mason McKenzie, Evan Dickens, Kaelan Chudzinski, KP Price and Anthony Palano
Bill O’Brien enters a vital season at Boston College.
The Eagles collapsed to two wins last year, leading O’Brien to take greater control of the offence.
Division II transfer Mason McKenzie is one of the more unusual quarterback bets in the conference. He will be supported by Liberty transfer Evan Dickens, who rushed for more than 1,300 yards and scored 16 touchdowns in 2025.
The offensive line replaces four starters, while the defence conceded almost 35 points per ACC game last season.
There is enough talent for improvement, but clear evidence of progress is essential.
Biggest question: Can O’Brien turn an interesting collection of transfers into a functional offence?
Prediction: 3-9.
17. Stanford Cardinal
2025 record: 4-8, 3-5 ACC
Canes Across the Pond prediction: 2-10
Key players: Davis Warren, Mike Mitchell Jr., Micah Ford, Matt Rose and Jay Green
Stanford begin another rebuild, this time under former Cardinal quarterback and assistant Tavita Pritchard.
Michigan transfer Davis Warren will compete with freshman Mike Mitchell Jr. at quarterback. Running back Micah Ford is likely to become the focal point of the offence.
Four offensive-line starters return, giving Pritchard at least one stable foundation.
The difficulties are roster depth and schedule. Stanford face Miami, Notre Dame, Louisville, Virginia Tech, California and SMU.
This season should be judged on development and competitiveness rather than a serious bowl challenge.
Biggest question: Can Stanford demonstrate that a sustainable rebuilding plan is finally in place?
Prediction: 2-10
Can Anyone Stop Miami?
There is no shortage of challengers.
SMU have the quarterback, schedule and recent conference record to reach Charlotte. Louisville possess the running game and coaching required to beat anyone. Clemson still have enough defensive talent to rediscover their old form.
Virginia Tech could improve quickly under Franklin. NC State, Georgia Tech, Pitt and California are all capable of beating one of the favourites. Florida State remain talented enough to transform the race if their offensive line holds together.
None of them possess Miami’s combination of depth, quarterback play, running backs, receivers and defensive talent.
That does not make the Hurricanes unbeatable.
A rebuilt offensive line will be tested. Trips to Clemson and Notre Dame provide major challenges. Florida State will treat its visit to Hard Rock Stadium as an opportunity to rescue an entire season.
Miami will also carry expectation rather than hope.
Reaching the national championship game means there are no moral victories left. Cristobal’s team are expected to win now.
The target is not merely another Playoff appearance.
It is Miami’s first ACC football championship.

The Last Word from Across the Pond
Miami have spent more than two decades in the ACC without winning its football championship.
They have produced NFL players, beaten major opponents, changed coaches, rebuilt recruiting pipelines and reached the national championship game.
The ACC trophy is still missing.
The 2026 Hurricanes appear to have everything required to correct that. They have the conference’s most complete roster, an outstanding quarterback, one of the country’s most exciting receivers, a deep group of running backs and a defence filled with future professionals.
They also enter the year as the overwhelming choice of the ACC media.
The championship race will not be straightforward. Teams will play different numbers of league games. Matching win or loss totals can bring programmes into the same tie. An analytics ranking could decide who reaches Charlotte when head-to-head results cannot separate them.
Miami’s best solution is therefore rather obvious.
Do not leave anything to the tiebreaker.
Win the games, reach Charlotte and finally lift the trophy.
Miami versus SMU. Miami win the ACC. Then the real work begins.
