Miami’s latest camp storyline is not just about replacing production. It is about replacing presence.
With Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor now gone, Ahmad Moten is being asked to become one of the leaders of Miami’s new-look defensive front.
That feels like an important development for this defence.
Moten showed flashes of his ability during Miami’s College Football Playoff run last season, and his progress has reportedly been built on extra film study, improved footwork and continued technical work behind the scenes. Now the challenge is different. He is no longer simply part of the rotation. Miami need him to help set the standard.
The Hurricanes still have plenty of talent up front, with Justin Scott, Armondo Blount, Marquise Lightfoot and Damon Wilson II all competing for major roles. But every talented room needs a voice, and Moten looks ready to take on more responsibility.
Another camp battle worth watching is at kicker.
Jack Olsen and Jake Weinberg are competing for Miami’s placekicking job, and it sounds like a genuinely interesting fight. Olsen brings the proven consistency after a strong season at Northwestern, while Weinberg offers serious leg strength.
It might not be the most glamorous August storyline, but these are exactly the sorts of battles that can end up mattering in tight ACC games later in the season.
Miami also picked up another piece of national recognition, with Mohamed Toure named to the Butkus Award watch list. That is a deserved nod for one of the more established figures in the defence and another sign that this roster still has proven quality even as new leaders begin to emerge.
There were no major new injury updates to report, so the focus now shifts towards Miami’s next scrimmage and which players can strengthen their case for bigger roles.

Moten is being asked to lead, Olsen and Weinberg are battling over an important job, and Toure continues to earn national recognition. Miami clearly have star power. The next few weeks are about finding out how well it all works together.
