Miami’s offence tends to dominate the conversation, and fairly enough. Darian Mensah has been ridiculous, Malachi Toney keeps producing highlight plays and the Hurricanes are scoring nearly 50 points a game.
But the most interesting thing in today’s ACC numbers might be on the other side of the ball.
Miami are now allowing just 60 rushing yards per game, the best mark in the entire FBS. For all the talk about explosive offence, that’s another big reason the Hurricanes are 7-0 and sitting at No. 1.
A defensive strength Miami can trust
It also says something useful about this team. Miami have had defensive lapses. Florida State put up 35. Pittsburgh scored 23. There are still moments where the secondary gives you something to worry about. But opponents are not running on them. That part has been consistently strong, and it gives Corey Hetherman a reliable foundation each week.
One encouraging sign is that Miami’s defensive front keeps giving them answers. The ACC stats confirm the overall output, and recent CaneSport analysis has highlighted the work being done by players such as Marquise Lightfoot and Justin Scott. The defensive line has set the tone for much of the season. If Miami control the line of scrimmage again, they should put themselves in a good position to leave Chapel Hill 8-0.
A familiar challenge awaits in Chapel Hill
That should matter again on Saturday night.
North Carolina are not a glamorous matchup on paper, but they are awkward enough to demand respect. Bill Belichick’s team are 4-3, have already beaten Pittsburgh and Duke on the road, and will fancy their chances of testing Miami in Chapel Hill. The Hurricanes also know this has not been a friendly fixture recently. North Carolina have won the last five meetings, and Miami have not won there since 2017.
So while the big national conversation is already drifting towards Notre Dame, this is still a game with proper danger attached to it.
Xavier Lucas remains worth monitoring after leaving the Pittsburgh game, and Max Buchanan’s recovery is still relevant, but this morning’s main takeaway is simpler than that. Miami are not just winning with offence. They are winning with a defence that has become the best run-stopping unit in the country.
Halloween kick-off details for UK Canes
For UK Canes, the viewing details are now clear. Miami at North Carolina kicks off at 11:30pm UK time on Saturday 31 October, with the game on ABC in the United States and DAZN in the UK. Because the clocks have already changed here but not yet in America, we get a slightly kinder start than usual. Not exactly an early night, but I’ll take 11:30 over some of the nonsense we’ve had this season.
The Last Word from Across the Pond
I think this is the part of Miami’s season that could get overlooked a bit. Everyone sees Mensah, Toney and the points total. Fair enough. But being the best team in the country against the run gives Miami something more dependable than fireworks. It gives them a way to control games when things get uncomfortable. North Carolina have been a nuisance matchup for years, so Saturday feels like a good test of whether this Miami team is truly different. If the Hurricanes go into Chapel Hill, shut down the run and finally end that losing streak, that will tell us plenty.
