It has been a quieter Miami team news day, leaving the focus firmly on Friday night as the No. 5 Hurricanes prepare to take their 2-0 start on the road against unbeaten Wake Forest.
One other story worth acknowledging from yesterday is Miami’s historic new apparel agreement with Nike, which will bring the Hurricanes back to the Swoosh from 2027. Miami are one day away from an unbeaten ACC clash
There is not much new to report from Coral Gables today beyond the Nike deal we covered yesterday.
No major commitment.
No significant roster move.
No fresh official injury announcement.
And rather than dig something up from three days ago and pretend otherwise, we can turn our attention to what actually matters.
Miami play tomorrow.
The No. 5 Hurricanes travel to Winston-Salem to face Wake Forest at 7:30pm ET on Friday (12:30 in the UK).
Both teams are 2-0.
Miami have arrived there by dismantling Stanford 45-6 and Florida A&M 77-7.
Wake Forest have taken a slightly more adventurous route, beating Akron before surviving Purdue 38-36 in double overtime.
The Hurricanes have won eight consecutive meetings with Wake Forest and lead the all-time series 9-3. Remarkably, the Demon Deacons’ last victory over Miami came in 1944.
None of that helps tomorrow night.
This is Miami’s second ACC road game in three weeks and, unlike Stanford, Wake arrive unbeaten and with a quarterback capable of causing problems in different ways.
It feels like the right next test.
Miami remain three-touchdown favourites
The market continues to expect Miami to win comfortably.
Current lines have the Hurricanes at around 20.5-point favourites, with the total sitting around 56.5.
That is a lot of respect for Miami on the road against another unbeaten Power Four team.
It is also understandable.
Through two games, Darian Mensah has completed 41 of 45 passes for 653 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions.
Miami’s offence has scored 122 points.
The defence has not conceded a touchdown.
Wake quarterback Gio Lopez gives that defence something different.
Lopez has thrown for 575 yards and four touchdowns without an interception, but it was his legs that decided the Purdue game. He rushed for 59 yards and two touchdowns, including the score that forced the decisive two-point attempt before running in the winner himself.
Miami’s front cannot simply pin its ears back and chase the quarterback.
Containment matters.
The secondary remains the position to watch
There is no meaningful new official availability update today.
The position to watch tomorrow remains the secondary.
Miami have already been dealing with the losses of OJ Frederique Jr. and Ja’Boree Antoine, and Wake’s passing attack should provide a better examination of the reshuffled defensive backfield than FAMU managed.
The encouraging part is the experience Miami have already been able to give younger defenders.
Now we get to see how that depth looks when the starters might actually need to play four quarters.
The Last Word from Across the Pond
The Hurricanes have been almost flawless through two games, but Friday night should provide a different challenge.
Wake Forest are unbeaten, Gio Lopez can hurt Miami through the air and on the ground, and the Canes are taking a reshuffled secondary into another ACC road environment.
Miami are No. 5 and expected to win comfortably.
Now comes the interesting bit.
Can they make another potentially difficult assignment look easy?
