We have finally reached the point of August we have been waiting for.
Miami are preparing for an actual opponent.
With two scrimmages complete and three weeks of fall camp behind them, the Hurricanes are beginning to shift their attention towards Stanford.
That changes everything.
The last few weeks have been about combinations, position battles and giving younger players opportunities.
Now Darian Mensah is preparing for Stanford’s defence. Corey Hetherman is preparing for Stanford’s offence. The questions inside the building become much more specific.
And Miami get one useful advantage before making the trip to California.
Stanford play Hawaii before facing the Canes, giving Mario Cristobal and his staff fresh 2026 film to work with before opening night.
Camp is ending.
Game preparation has arrived.
The offensive line remains the biggest question
Miami do not have many major questions left, but the offensive line is still the one that matters most.
There is obvious talent available.
Jackson Cantwell has been firmly involved in the competition, while Alex Mirabal has spent camp rotating combinations and trying to find the right five.
But talent and cohesion are different things.
Miami already know what they have around the line.
Mensah at quarterback.
Malachi Toney and Cooper Barkate at receiver.
Mark Fletcher Jr. leading one of the deepest running back rooms in the country.
If Miami give Mensah time, this offence has an enormous ceiling.
That is why the offensive line remains the position group I most want to see against Stanford.
A few smaller questions remain
State of The U also highlighted linebacker depth and special teams among the remaining concerns entering the season.
Mohamed Toure gives Miami experience at linebacker, but the depth behind the established names still needs to prove itself across a full season.
Special teams is easier to overlook, but Miami have room to create more explosive plays in the return game after limited production there last year.
None of this feels alarming.
They are simply the areas where we still need answers.
And compared with where Miami were at the beginning of August, that list is getting very short.
Stanford is next
Miami open the 2026 season at Stanford on Friday 4 September at 9pm ET on ESPN. For UK viewers, that means a 2am kick-off on Saturday 5 September.
The countdown feels different now.
We are no longer waiting for another scrimmage or trying to work out who had a good Tuesday practice.
Miami are preparing for the team they are actually going to play.
Stanford get their first game beforehand.
Then it is Miami’s turn.
The Last Word from Across the Pond
Monday might have been a quieter news day, but it brought the update we have been waiting for all month.
Fall camp is giving way to Stanford preparation.
There are still questions around the offensive line, linebacker depth and special teams, but that is normal at this stage.
Miami have spent August building the team.
Now Cristobal and his staff have to prepare it to win a football game.
