Miami’s first full week of fall camp is in the books, and while the headline names will keep drawing most of the attention, one of the more important talking points right now is depth.
The Hurricanes have plenty of top-end talent entering 2026, but camp is beginning to show where the roster will really be tested once the season starts.
One player attracting attention is Omar Thornton, the Boston College transfer who looks set to give Miami another experienced option in the secondary. Thornton arrives in Coral Gables with strong ACC production already behind him and could prove to be a valuable piece in Corey Hetherman’s defence.
Another name worth watching is Chase Smith, who is pushing for a starting role at linebacker after an injury-hit college career. If Smith can stay healthy and deliver consistently, he could help answer one of the bigger questions surrounding Miami’s defence.
Depth on both lines also remains firmly under the spotlight.
The offensive line has to replace four starters from last season, with players such as Ryan Rodriguez, Samson Okunlola and Matthew McCoy bringing experience, while younger names like Jackson Cantwell and SJ Alofaituli continue to compete for spots.
Defensively, Miami are also working to replace the production lost with Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor. Damon Wilson II, Marquise Lightfoot and Armondo Blount are among the players expected to help keep the pass rush at a high level.
There were no major new injury updates or recruiting headlines to lead with on Saturday, so the main focus remains on how the depth chart starts to take shape over the coming days.

Miami clearly have the star power to carry big expectations into 2026, but camp is already reminding us that a season is never won by the first 22 alone. Thornton, Smith and the battles on both lines are all worth watching closely, because the Canes’ depth could go a long way towards deciding how far this team can really go.
